If you want to grow sweet cherries at home, Cherry Stella is the variety to choose. One of the most popular and reliable sweet cherries ever bred, Stella is self-fertile, heavy cropping and produces large, dark red cherries with a wonderfully rich, sweet flavour. Whether eaten fresh by the handful or used in desserts and preserves, homegrown Stella cherries are a real summer treat.

About the Fruit

Stella cherries are large, heart-shaped fruits with deep red to almost black glossy skin and firm, juicy, sweet dark flesh. They ripen from late June to July and are outstanding eaten fresh straight from the tree. They also work beautifully in cherry tarts, clafoutis, jams and compotes.

Planting Tips

Plant in a warm, sunny and sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Avoid frost pockets as cherry blossom is vulnerable to late frosts. Water regularly during the first growing season and mulch around the base. Prune in summer after fruiting to reduce the risk of bacterial canker. Net the tree as fruit ripens to protect from birds — they love Stella cherries just as much as we do!
