Apple James Grieve

Apple James Grieve is a much-loved Scottish heritage variety that has been a firm favourite in British gardens since it was raised in Edinburgh in the 1890s. Dual-purpose and exceptionally versatile, James Grieve is outstanding eaten fresh when young and sharp, and equally superb for cooking as it ripens and sweetens. A reliable, heavy-cropping tree that performs particularly well in cooler, northern gardens.

About the Fruit

James Grieve apples are medium to large in size with pale yellow-green skin flushed and striped with orange-red. The flesh is tender, juicy and melting with a rich, sweet-sharp flavour that develops from pleasantly tart in early season to sweeter and more aromatic as the fruit fully ripens in September. An excellent all-rounder for eating, cooking, juicing and pressing into cider.

Growing Information

  • Mid-season variety — harvest from late August to September
  • Dual-purpose — excellent for both fresh eating and cooking
  • Reliable and heavy cropping, particularly well-suited to cooler northern gardens
  • Good pollinator for other varieties — pollination group B
  • Requires a compatible pollinator nearby (e.g. Discovery, Katy, Elstar)
  • Thrives in most well-drained soils in a sunny or lightly sheltered position
  • Suitable for growing as a bush, half-standard or cordon

Planting Tips

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. James Grieve is more tolerant of cooler conditions than many varieties, making it an excellent choice for northern and Scottish gardens. Stake young trees for the first few years, water regularly during dry spells and prune in winter to maintain a productive, open framework.
