Apple Discovery
Apple Discovery is a British-bred classic and one of the most popular early-season apples ever grown. Raised in Essex in the 1940s, Discovery has been delighting gardeners and fruit lovers for generations with its beautiful appearance, refreshing flavour and reliable cropping. If you want to be picking homegrown apples in August, Discovery is the tree for you.
About the Fruit
Discovery apples are medium-sized with striking bright red skin — one of the most colourful of all apple varieties. The flesh is white with a pink tinge near the skin, crisp and juicy with a sweet, slightly strawberry-like flavour that is wonderfully refreshing. Best eaten fresh straight from the tree in August and early September as they don't store for long.
Growing Information
- Very early season variety — harvest from mid to late August
- One of the most attractive apples with vivid red skin
- Reliable and consistent cropper with good disease resistance
- Requires a compatible pollinator nearby — pollination group B (e.g. Katy, James Grieve)
- Thrives in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained, fertile soil
- Suitable for growing as a bush, half-standard or cordon
- RHS Award of Garden Merit holder
Planting Tips
Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Stake young trees for the first few years and water regularly during dry spells. Prune in winter to maintain an open, airy framework. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Discovery crops best when eaten fresh so pick regularly as fruit ripens.
